* The Changing Landscape

October 31, 2011

A friend of mine recently pointed me to some statistics and it blew me away. It’s a game changer for all business owners. It changed the way I look at the future completely.

First of all, let’s look at how we used to advertise. TV commercials, Newspaper ads, telesales, Mailers and emails. Now, lets look at the counter measures technology has brought the public:

1. TV commercials are ignored because of Tivo

2. Newspaper Ads are ignored because people get their news online

3. Telesales are obsolete (thank God) because of Caller ID

4. Mailers mostly just go into the recycle bin

5. Spam Emails are caught in spam filters or just deleted

Now I’m not in total agreement with all of the items listed above, but it does grab your attention. If the landscape has changed so much, then we, as business owners, have to change with it.

Experts say that 22% of the time spent on the internet is social. That there are 24% more users on social networks vs email. And, since more time is being spent on mobile apps, rather than at the desktop, there are 200% more mobile users on Facebook rather than on their computer. Makes a person think doesn’t it.

Now is the time to move more to where your clients are rather than trying to push advertising down their throat. Write a blog with an RSS feed, do webinars, and find followers on twitter. Expand your reach by leveraging connections on the social networks. If you can afford it, develop a free app for their phones. Make sure your eBlasts are targeted and not just spam.

It’s time to roll with the changes. Look at your customer base and how you reach prospects. Are you changing with the times?

Now get out there and look good!
